A Better India A Better World

Reading The better India the better world and also trying to put the book thought in my words with few examples from my side. Its a good book and worth reading. This book is basically  is a collection of Mr Narayan murthy lectures at different places across the globe. It covers wide perspective form Politics to foreign trade to law and Of course technology

Few Good Points from the book

1.We have to recognize that public sector interest is not  public interest and interest of government is not the interest of the people

2.The biggest bane of our thousand year old enslavement is apathy.the main reason of our poverty is our unwillingness to take proactive action when solution is is standing right infront of us staring at our face

3.We have learned and mastered the skill of escaping from our responsibilities to solve our problem by blaming  our destiny

What to learn from west ?

4. Apathy in addressing the community matters has held us back from making progress which is otherwise within our reach. We do see and waste our time in analyzing the problems around us but never try to solve them .We behave as if the problem do not exist at all or as if they belong to some one else. In the West people  people approach societal problem proactively. reason??- we were ruled by foreigners for over a thousand years so we have always believed that public or societal issues belong to some foreign ruler and  we have no responsibility to solve them. We are so used to follow orders and hence a very very weak decision making capabilities.in Short in Aristotle words "We are what we repeatedly do" sounds so right.

eg:40 year old suggestion by irrigation expert to conquer the problem of drought and flood was to create a water grid consisting all the rivers from north and south.as of now no action being taken in that direction

5.Another important trait what we Indian can learn from west is accountability. In the west irrespective of your position you are held accountable for what you do where as in India the more important you are the less responsible you are

may be a little from their professionalism in dealing business

Corruption ?? is it really invincible

A positive example of how corruption can could be fought. Few years ago a minister of singaporean community was charged for corruption and was found guilty after primary investigation. He ran to PM asking if there was something what could be done to save his honor  but after getting a negative reply and understanding it very clearly that his career is actually over and he will be punished he came back and put a bullet in his head. Think how strong message was sent by this action?

This is where i end my first part will soon put the review for the other half of the book

Banker to the poor - review

The Story of man with a vision
Some body who was more worried about practical problems out there rather than just teaching economics ..and with a belief that universities should not be an island where academics attain higher and higher knowledge without sharing any of it knowledge...
Some body wanted to understand if banks are there to help poor or just to  make wealthy wealthier ??
The story of a man who challenged almost every thing related to banking sector, be it credit scheme or the documentation process

Loved the way he questions the existing system , his sharp and to the point question about the very existence of banking rules and achieving such a grand success having zero banking experience is a credit in itself.
Though the book is a little lengthy but its a nice read and people who have seen rural area problems will be able to connect to it in a better way . There are some real learning’s here that can be applied in the social lending arena. Grameen Bank has made $ 3.4 billion dollars in loans to 2.4 million people. Yes … that’s an average loan size of $1,400. This is an extraordinary figure, that normal banks would sneer at, as being unprofitable, and impossible to process at a profit.
I loved the first and second that is beginning and Experimental part Though i find the replicating that is part !V a little boring. Philosophy is another must read section. In short it was worth spending my sunday morning for this book ..

The Village By The Sea

The Village by the sea
  Anita Desai :

In general all her are vivid and this is one more nice book in the series of
1.)Cry, The Peacock
2.)Fire On the Mountain
3.)Bye-Bye Black Bird
three  must read books
This Story mainly revolves around
Hari
His Father who is basically a drunkyard
Her mother - who is anemic and growing weaker day by day
her sister - Lila- who is very mature girl compare to her age
and two more of hre younger sister
and their beloved dog
There are few more characters which have positive role like Jaggu and Wrist watch maker uncle who gives Hari the best siksha that One must go on learning
because any thing you learn will be useful here or there in a positive way
This Story also explains in a very ballanced way the how poverty can impact the whole family life and how in small places even earning a small bread is so tough. there is another positive character b name "Biju" who is a little showoff guy
but good at heart and so is D souza uncle family who help Hari family at bad time .. In short story is narrated in a very very positive sense and i loved the way she has very beautifully, through her story, given an apt solution for the problem. She makes us think that life is after all beautiful, and shouldn’t be wasted.
i will put this book in  Kite runner and A thousand splendid Sun category and i really enjoyed my 3 hour read . Its  a slim book and out of print as of now.

wanna kiss ??? Wait a minute

Wanna kiss?? Wait a minute you can be convicted for rape…

We have read a lot about what happened with Ruchika Gehrotra Where the girl was molested by Haryana IG S.P.S Rathore in 1990 and what is even more noticeable here  is the punishment he got. Any way this blog is not to tell the flaws in judicial system . We all know that we live in a messy country, where theory of randomness has a greater say over any other theories (if there are any). Not yet convicted for anything? You must be lucky because one day you can just find a snap on your door saying you have been charged under so an so case- have fun for the rest of your life time finding out who did what. And Ofcourse “why “ if you can
After Ruchika case our judicial system thought , people are saying so many bad things about us let us do something at least for a change.  And they come up with this – A new draft  Bill Under which – If a man forcibly puts his finger in to woman’s  mouth or lets his tongue enter her mouth during a kiss (if you can restrain doing this and yet to manage a kiss our law is ok with that) he could end up in jail for sexual assault with the sentence no less than the punishment for rape (yes you heard it right – for the “Rape”) which is seven years of life. Wait a minute – have you guys gone nuts Are you telling us that there is no difference between a “vilolent Rape and Kiss” ? you got to be kidding me. There has to be something better than you guys have come up with. You mean to say the guy who just happens to kiss his girl friend is going to be charged against Rape (ofcourse the GF didn’t quite liked it )?  Rest of the life he will be known as rapist?.
I don’t deny that Indian laws on sexual assault have been extremely weak. At present section 375 and 376 deals of IPC deals which deals with the Rape.  But Wont this kind of law (The new amended one ) could be used at a greater extent merely to extort money , to outright panic that the doors would be thrown open for false cases that can destroy a person reputation. I know whats in your mind , you wanna say – Why don’t you suggest something about how do we handles millions of “Rathores” out there.  well I bet I have one  – how about giving the trial system a real pace when it is about rape ,molestation ?Hang The molesters  if you want but at  least do this in a Fare way. Give them chance to say what they have to say about this. Why not murder ? I am sorry I thought you already knew this – there were 30 million pending murder cases as of sep 2009 which will take – I don’t know may be decades to resolve all given we (the people of india) take an oath not to murder any body hereafter for any reason. So I thought at least the rape and sexual molestation charges trial can be a little speed up ?
High time our honourable judges please wake up , bring something real on desk at least for a change. I know you have slogged enough to reach that place and you have lost touch with work (The Real one ) but then atleast don’t throw some thing as stupid as this to us. Don’t call us rapist we happen to kiss our GF when she was in bad mood

Are we ready for it ?

“When Men delayed History in INDIA a Woman creates history” this was the headline from one of the leading newspaper “The Economic Times” . One day later the news was“Women bill passed”. I was trying to find out how good it is going to serve INDIA as a decision or it’s a just another political move? I am not definitely trying to put a dictum about how good or bad the decision was, but I have few facts to put and I leave the decision up to you.

So far all the political parties have terrible record of giving women a share in political representation. Take for example 2009 election there were 8070 candidates who contested in these polls. Only 7 percent that is 556 were women candidate. So is it there are less good women available for representation or it is something else ? if former is the case aren’t we compromising the nation future. I don’t have single instance in mind where the reservation has served any purpose other than making rich richer.

I was told by women friend of mine that this is exactly we need reservation because this will bring more representation from the community which is considered to be comparatively week. And I had to tell her that just in case if you don’t know “OBC and Muslim women not to be given representation” because our constitution says They can have reservation only in jobs and education but not in legislatures. I am very sorry to say that though it’s a very good move but was not being taken keeping the nation interest in mind. It was mere a political move by Sonia Gandhi to bring Rahul Gandhi to power. The process was initiated at this point because she wanted to widening parties base ,luring in to mainstream whole new constituencies hoping that this will guarantee 300 + seats in loksabha so Rahul Gandhi can be king when he becomes PM ?

When I tried to dig a little more on NOT what Sonia Gandhi really think about it but what she actually does , the facts were surprising. Despite the fact that she shouts it so loudly that she is for woman empowerment she had allotted just about 10% of total seats for women in last election. Mayawati party BSP did even worst by restricting it to 5%.

Check this fact , out of the 59 women MP s 40 to be precise were crorepatis. And - out of the 59 Female MP s 10 have criminal cases pending against them. That makes it 17% of the women representative are criminals. What bothers me is, will we be ever able to find good representatives with this Quota rules? Can my nation take this as well? We need good and Strong leaders irrespective of their Sex. Our Foreign policies are messed up , China growth is bothering us day by day and eating our employment , and our honorable representatives are too busy to give a damn about what country needs. Party comes first and then country. People told me that decisions come out after a proper discussion in Loksabha so I decided one day to listen to that as well. After listening to two hour of discussion I felt there is nothing what these buggers care about other than shouting at each other. There wasn’t a single healthy discussion in 2 hour session and no wonder why only stupid policies and decisions come out of this place.

My research on this bill was able to convince me that there is nothing actually that good as it was portrayed. It’s just yet another political move to increase vote bank and the nation is definitely not ready for it. It’s a very good thing to give reservation to women but maybe this is not the right time. I have not even an iota of doubt that women have better management capabilities than any of men can ever have but there is lot of homework to be done before we expect that we as a nation can actual reap the benefit out of the capabilities our female counterparts have. And reserving seats in LS definitely doesn't serves the purpose helping them to grow by giving them equal space does.Celebrating every day as women's day does, Giving them the respect they always deserved and ever denied, Does.
